Session Management and Launch Behavior
This page explains how the Launcher handles running apps (sessions), when it focuses existing windows versus starting another one, and how profile entries and session actions affect behavior.
What You'll Learn
- What a session is and how it relates to a container
- What happens when you launch an app that is already running
- How Launch Profiles can change startup behavior
- When and how to use Delete sessions (reset local session data) safely
Overview
A session is the running instance of an application inside its Turbo container. Your app’s settings and caches usually live inside the container so they persist between launches. Depending on the app and the selected Launch Profile, launching again may either bring the existing window to the front or open another window within the same container.
What happens when you launch
When you start an app from the Launcher:
- If the app is already running, the Launcher typically brings its existing window(s) to the front.
- Some apps start another window or task in the same container when launched again. This is normal for apps that support multiple windows.
- Your organization’s policy may choose to always focus the existing app instead of starting another window. If you expect a new window and don’t see one, look for the existing window on your taskbar/dock.
Advanced note: When you click Run and a session is already running, the Launcher automatically decides whether to bring the existing window to the front or start another process in that session based on the app/profile identity and configuration—there is no extra prompt.
Launch Profiles
Launch Profiles are preset ways to start an app (for example, New Window, Incognito/Private, or Diagnostics).
How to use: Right‑click the app, then click the desired profile entry that appears directly under Run (for example, Run Chrome (Incognito)). Profiles are like shortcuts with different arguments/flags.
Notes:
- Profiles can change startup options (such as opening a new window or starting with diagnostics).
- If you need a second copy or window, try a profile labeled “New Window” (when available), or launch the app again. Some apps always reuse the existing window based on their own design.
Manage sessions
- New session — Starts a fresh, separate instance of the application.
- Delete sessions (Factory Reset) — Resets the application to its initial state.
What "Delete Session" Does
Think of "Delete Session" as a Factory Reset for the app.
- It Deletes: Application settings, browser history, installed extensions, and temporary files stored in
AppData. - It Preserves: Your files in Documents, Desktop, and Turbo Drive, as these are mapped to persistent storage.
Common scenarios
- I click the app and nothing appears
- The app may already be running. The Launcher usually brings its window to the front. Check your taskbar/dock and any minimized windows.
- I want another window of the same app
- Use a Launch Profile like “New Window” if available, or start the app again. Some apps always reuse the existing window.
- I see a note that the app is running in another Windows session
- Sign in to the original Windows session or fully close the app there, then try again. If you cannot switch sessions, contact your administrator.
- I relaunched right after closing and it still won’t start
- The app may still be shutting down. Wait a few seconds and try again.
Troubleshooting
- Try Delete sessions if the app is stuck or corrupted.
- Use Run in Diagnostic Mode when support asks for logs.
- If problems persist, see the Launcher Troubleshooting pages or contact your administrator.
